QUESTIONS ANSWERED...

How much would it cost to build an Olympic sized pool in your backyard?

Answer...

Olympians compete in pools that are exactly 50 meters long. The minimum depth needed for starting blocks is three feet. Olympic heats use 8 lanes. Those are the minimum requirements to be able to call it an Olympic pool. Built outdoors in the US, inground, concrete, with a filter system in a shed, and with no extraneous features could run only a hundred thousand.

But a fast pool will be much deeper, at least 8 feet deep. Depth lessens the waves that bounce off the bottom. An Olympic pool must not have any "currents" from the filtration system that would prevent you from certifying a qualifying swim. It might have sliding bulkheads that would allow training and racing at 25 yards and 25 meters (the indoor and outdoor standards for non-Olympic competition), which also effectively doubles it to 16 lanes. It might have underwater lights, maybe some extra deep gutters to absorb waves (competitors don't like getting sloshed around in surface waves). You'll want lots of above ground lighting for evening events, maybe some stadium seating for spectators.

To hold real meets you will need at least a wing off the side for a twenty foot deep diving well or better yet an entirely separate pool just for diving with several one meter and three meter boards and five and ten meter platforms. The diving well is kept much warmer, about 86f. Divers get cold easily. They also need a hot tub kept at 104f. that holds twelve people.

The swimmers though get hot. Fast swimming is extremely strenuous. Heart rates around 200 are typical in swimming fast. The coaches will require you maintain 79.5f for training and 79.0f for racing. Deviation of .2 in either direction will get you complaints from the coaches. A very powerful filtration and heating system is necessary.

Lockerrooms, electronic scoreboard, electronic timing system (touchpads), offices, equipment storage, spectator facilities, janitorial, medical room, etc. So even with an outdoor complex you're probably looking at maybe five million.

Want to make it a seriously excellent facility that can host the NCAAs? You need to build a natatorium with an acre of deck space, weight rooms, conference rooms, industrial kitchen, huge skylights, air handling systems (you've got a building with three heated pools, yes, the hot tub has its own system and counts as a pool, you're going to have some serious HVAC), and seating for two thousand or more. You'll be lucky to squeak it out for 25 million. Want to attract the best swimmers and coaches in the world? Add another five million and make everything absolutely state-of-the-art. If you do Michael Phelps will come train at your pool and bring his private coach.

How much does an inground pool cost?

Answer...

Depends. On what? you ask. Well, where do you live? What size? How do you want it to be configured? An inground pool in Florida is not going to cost as much as one in, say, New York City or Dallas, TX or Phoenix, AZ. A pool 50′ long and 20’ wide will cost a lot more than a 10′x10′ pool A simple square pool will be less than a pool that is irregular shaped to a custom design. And if your ground is soft and easily dug, it will be less than if your soil is rocky and you have a layer of bedrock only six or so feet down that has to be blasted out. Also, howls the water supply where you live? Again, in Phoenix, it’s liable to be pricey, possibly you can’t even build a pool there because of the water. In Florida, just dig and it will fill itself!

Local swimming pools planning to open for Summer 2021

(ABC 6 NEWS) - It might not feel like it, but summer is right around the corner and that means pools are going to start being filled again. After last summer off, some local pools are trying to map out all the plans.

"Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best so we've got a couple of different scenarios in mind," said Austin Parks and Rec Director, Kevin Nelson.

Austin, Rochester, and Albert Lea all hope to open their pools at the beginning of June, but how that will look is still not fully clear. COVID-19 guidelines could change by opening day and all the pools have different plans for whatever waves come their way.

"What that looks like we are still unsure, but I think staffing for me is the scariest part because we are struggling to find specifically lifeguards because not opening last year we lost a lot of staff," said Albert Lea Parks and Rec. Recreation program supervisor, Jenny Davis.

The Albert Lea Aquatic Center will open, but may not be to capacity.

"We are planning on opening no matter what, but it depends too on staffing. I mean the guidelines could open up a lot, but we may still be at a staffing level where we can only let so many people in," said Davis.

In Austin, another issue comes to mind, what about masks?

Watching that masks are worn when people are out of the pool. That is going to be a little bit of a sticky situation because where do kids or adults lay their masks when they are in the pool," said Nelson.

And in Rochester, only the Soldier's Field pool will be open after the city saved roughly $80,000 from closing both last year. The Rochester Parks and Rec. department is not planning on opening the Silver Lake pool.

"Closing both of the pools last summer was kind of a combination of safety with concerns about the pandemic, but it was also some cost-saving measures," said Rochester Parks and Rec. Recreation Supervisor, Ben Boldt.

After a summer off, they are just hoping for the best, especially when the pool gets filled up.

"Potentially some more wild cards we will see what happens when we fire up all the systems here, but we are hopeful things will be easy to get up and going and we will have a good summer," said Boldt.

Rochester plans to open Soldier's Field pool on June 4th, Albert Lea will open on June 5 and Austin on June 7.
